To celebrate Preservation Month in May, The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation is sponsoring a series of free online webinars to help owners of old homes learn how to take better care of them. The majority of homes in Mentelle neighborhood date between the 1890s and 1920s, so this information could be quite helpful!
The annual flower sale at Heritage Baptist Church, 163 N. Ashland Ave., began today and runs through Saturday. For more info, go to the Facebook event page. This is a great way to get some beautiful plants at good prices and support the activities of one of our neighborhood’s places of worship.
If you have spent some socially distanced time during the past year cleaning out your basement, garage and closets, you may have some junk — I mean formerly prized possessions — that you would prefer to have someone else own. So, is there interest in doing a neighborhood yard sale this summer? Having our neighborhood yard sales on the same day allows us to do some marketing and draw a bigger crowd of buyers.
Please comment below if you would be interested in participating in a neighborhood yard sale, and if so, when. Based on responses, the MNA board will consider organizing one.
The Mentelle Neighborhood Association’s board of directors will have its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday April 21 via Zoom. Any association member is welcome to attend. If you would like to attend, please email secretary Tom Eblen for the Zoom link.
City officials are asking our neighborhood’s residents to respond to a survey about Charles Young Park, near the corner of East Third Street and Midland Avenue. Even if you don’t use Charles Young Park — and don’t think you will — please participate. The survey is part of a Knight Foundation initiative, so it could result in more grant funding for Lexington parks and public spaces. Click here for more information about the survey and the park. Thanks to everyone who came out for this morning’s Mentelle Neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt. It was great to be able to gather safely again after having to cancel this annual event last year. Thank especially to organizer Kim Naujokas and her helpers, and to the 27 neighborhood families that donated a record 960 eggs for the kids to find. Happy Easter!
Council Member Hannah LeGris has forwarded this request from Michell Kosieniak, superintendent of planning and design for the city’s Parks & Recreation department, about Charles Young Park near the corner of Midland Avenue and East Third Street:
Dear Neighbor,
To improve our communities, we know that we must work together. Our partnership of community organizations, that includes Lexington Parks and Recreation, Charles Young Advisory Board, and the Blue Grass Community Foundation, value your input, and we appreciate your thoughts about public spaces, such as parks, trails, libraries, community centers, etc.
Who was Col. Charles Young? Click on his portrait to find out more.
In particular, we would like area residents’ thoughts on Charles Young Park. As improvements are made to the park, we would like your feedback on their impact to you and this community. This survey should take less than 10 minutes. The survey will be open through the end of April, your input is appreciated!
As a thank you, responders are eligible to win a drawing for a gift card to a local business. All survey responses are kept anonymous.
Please click the link to take the survey. Thank you again for your time and input.
Looking for a good book? Come look through the boxes on the porch of 52 Mentelle Park (if it’s not raining). There are slightly damaged new books and advance reader copies for all ages. Enjoy!
