We had a big turnout Sunday evening for the annual Mentelle Neighborhood Picnic. Thanks to everyone for the delicious food and good company.

Special thanks to the picnic organizers; grill master Eddie Owens; Raúl Chamorro Cobo for entertaining us with beautiful Spanish guitar music; Wilson’s Grocery & Meats for donating the delicious hamburgers and brats; Eppings at Eastside for providing wonderful macaroni and cheese and cookies; and the Lexington Fire Department for bringing a fire truck to entertain the children.

Today through Saturday, any Mentelle resident can shop at a Wilson’s and receive a 15% discount with the code MENTELLE (beer excluded.) The neighborhood association appreciates the support of our valued local businesses.

The annual neighborhood picnic is today, 5 p.m. until 7 p.m., in the Mentelle Park median nearest Cramer Avenue. All residents of Mentelle Neighborhood (Main to National, Mentelle Park to Walton) and their families are encouraged to attend.

Bring your own drinks and a dish to share: salad, side dish or dessert. Special thanks to Wilson’s Grocery & Meats, which is donating the hamburgers and hotdogs that our neighborhood grill master, Eddie Owens, will prepare.

The Lexington Fire Department plans to bring an engine for the kids to see (unless they have to fight a fire), and Raúl Chamorro Cobo will entertain with classical Spanish guitar music.  See you soon!

There will be treats along the way!  Sav’s Chill will set up an ice cream stand near the Cramer end of Mentelle Park. And the Reucroft brothers of Given Avenue will be selling lemonade and cold water at 710  Aurora Avenue (one of the tour stops). A portion of the lemonade/water stand proceeds will benefit the annual Ashland Elementary PTA Jogathon fundraiser.

The Mentelle Neighborhood Home & Garden Tour will feature seven homes  throughout the neighborhood on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The tour includes a mix of stately homes, bungalows and cozy cottages in our neighborhood, which is bounded by Richmond Road and National, Walton and Richmond avenues. You can explore the neighborhood’s architectural history and see impressive modern renovations of these houses that were built in the first three decades of the 20th century.

Tour tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased the day of the tour at Temple Adath Israel, 124 N. Ashland Ave., or by clicking here and using PayPal or your credit card.

The tour is a fundraiser for the Mentelle Neighborhood Association and its environmental, charitable and social activities. This is our second home and garden tour. The first tour, in September 2014, was a big success.

 

Temple Adath Israel once again brings the Jewish Food Festival to our neighborhood, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 8. Don’t miss it!

The Warehouse Block today unveiled the The Cubes, a new public art installation behind Local’s Craft Food & Drink that will serve as a gateway to the mixed-use commercial district within Mentelle Neighborhood.

The art installation, designed by Ryan Hargrove and Renato Virto of the University of Kentucky, was funded by the Warehouse Block Business Association and the Lexington Corridors Commission. The Cubes are along a landscaped path that will be called The Grove and will be illuminated at night with multicolored LED lighting.

About 40 people, including Urban County Council members Bill Farmer, chairman of the Corridors Commission; James Brown; and Amanda Mays Bledsoe, attended a dedication ceremony emceed by Chad Walker of Walker Properties.

“The Warehouse Block is an exciting, growing area downtown,” Mayor Linda Gorton said in a prepared statement, although she was unable to attend. “Public art is a good addition.”

See The Cubes on Saturday during the Block Party, featuring local artists, food trucks, businesses and non-profit organizations set up along National Avenue.  Music will be provided by three bands at the Mirror Twin Brewing Stage: Type Blue Band, Hi-5 and the StarDevils.  The event is family friendly and open to the public from noon until 10 p.m.
