Mentelle median volunteers: Mulch and topsoil will be delivered this afternoon about 2 p.m.  Since Mother Nature may be sending rain our way Saturday,  we’re asking anyone who has a little time this afternoon or evening to come out and help spread some topsoil or mulch and we can finish up tomorrow morning.  Please bring a shovel and wheelbarrow if you have one.  All help is appreciated!

Because more rain is forecast for the morning, the Mentelle median cleanup has been postponed until next Saturday, May 26, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

But if you are out and about at that time tomorrow and it’s not raining, you are welcome to join a few of us in the median to get a head start.  Next week, in addition to weeding beds, we will spread fill dirt and mulch.

Bring yourself and your tools to the annual Mentelle Median Work Day on Saturday, May 19, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. This is the time when we clean up and beautify the park that is our neighborhood’s “front yard” for such events as the Easter egg hunt and summer picnic.

We will weed and mulch flower beds and spread some fill dirt and seed around the new curbs. Bring some garden tools and a wheelbarrow if you have one. (It’s a good idea to put your name on your tools in case you get separated from them.)

The Mentelle Neighborhood Association has formed a median committee, headed by Jill and Ray DeBolt, to keep the median looking beautiful. If you have any questions about the work day, call Jill at 309-2022.

 

The National Association of Letter Carriers — those nice U.S. Postal Service people who bring mail to your door — will be having their 26^th annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this Saturday, May 12.

Carriers will be collecting non-perishable, unexpired canned and boxed food for donation to God’s Pantry in Lexington.

It’s easy to donate: Just gather and bag the items you want to donate and leave them near your mailbox Saturday for your carrier to pick up when he or she delivers your mail.

Let’s fill the mail trucks Saturday and help replenish our local food bank for the summer.

 

All residents of Mentelle neighborhood are invited to a progressive garden tour social beginning at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 3.

Three neighborhood gardens will be open for you to enjoy, plus there will be music, food and drink. The plan is to spend about 45 minutes at each garden, then move to the next.

The tour will begin at Page Etchison’s garden at 817 Cramer Ave. Next will be Esther Hurlburt’s garden at 309 Given Ave. The event will conclude in the garden of Shelby Reynolds and David Bartley at 710 Aurora Avenue.

Come out, enjoy the afternoon and meet some new neighbors.

Mark your calendars for the first weekend in June:

• Centered is celebrating its fifth anniversary Friday and Saturday, June 1 and 2, at 309 N. Ashland Ave., Suite 180. Other businesses in the Warehouse Block area are planning sidewalk sales during the weekend.
• The second annual all-neighborhood yard sale is Saturday, June 2, from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m., rain or shine. The Mentelle Neighborhood Association is asking residents who plan to have sales in their yard or garage to contribute $5 to help with promotional costs. Have good items but don’t want to organize your own sale? There will be a booth in the Mentelle Park median for residents who want to donate yard sale items, with proceeds going to the association. (Last year, the booth earned $265.50 for the association.)
• On Sunday, June 3, the association will sponsor a Garden Social. Mentelle neighborhood residents will be invited to enjoy food and drink in three of your neighbors’ gardens. More details will be announced in May.

City officials have invited residents of Mentelle and other nearby neighborhoods to a public meeting to hear details about the Town Branch Commons and Midland Avenue sanitary sewer construction projects. The meeting will be Tuesday, May 1, at 5:30 p.m. at the Charles Young Center, 503 E. Third St.

Town Branch Commons is an urban park and trail system that will connect new and existing downtown parks and the Town Branch and Legacy trails. The first phase begins with utility construction along Midland Avenue, including sanitary sewer improvements.

Construction is anticipated on Main Street, Eastern Avenue, Short Street and Midland Avenue by early summer. It will require temporary lane and road closures.

Heritage Baptist Church, 163 N. Ashland Ave., has its annual spring flower and plant sale April 25-28. Hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

This sale always has excellent flowers at good prices. Funds raised help support the church’s youth and children’s summer camps.

Kay is running for re-election as an at-large member of the Urban County Council. (The at-large council member with the most votes in each general election becomes vice mayor. Kay is in his second term as vice mayor.)
