Fall Fling

Sunday, October 25, 2009 4-7pm

We will be having our Fall Fling at the Bell House on Sunday October 25th. Join us from 4-7 p.m. for food, refreshments, games, art/craft displays and an all around good time. Since the following weekend is Halloween, costumes are certainly in order for those (young or old) who would like to dress up. We might even be able to come up with a prize or two. Anyone who would like to participate in the art/craft area, provide yard games for the kids, or anyone that might have a little musical talent or other suggestions, please contact Ray DeBolt.

Here’s the alphabetical breakdown for Sunday’s ‘pot luck’.

Household last names:
A to G – Salads
H to O – Veggies
P to Z – Desserts
The MNA will provide BBQ, hot dogs, buns, paper products, utensils, and soft beverages. While the MNA has a liquor permit for this event, through the Bell House, alcoholic beverages are supposed to be brought into the facility by the MNA. I will have a ‘box’ at the entrance where any donations may be placed and these will be brought in & set up on a table/cooler within the Bell House.

Easter Egg Hunt & Book Exchange

Saturday, April 11,2009 at 11am

Rain or shine, hop on down to the Mentelle median where the kids can join an Easter egg hunt. And, while the kids are hopping around, we'll also be having book swap table(s) set up for those of us who might be a little past our hopping stage. Anyone who would like to drop off books in advance may leave them on the porch of 42 Mentelle Park during the week preceding the event. Lemonade & cookies will be available whether you hop or not. It will be helpful to have an approximate number of kids to prepare for and I would appreciate a short e-mail, to chalfont@juno.com, indicating the number of kids and age range.

help. Thanks for your time and concern for the median. We are also
getting a group together to put together a solid plan for the entire
street - all medians- so volunteer and let's get started.

Fall General Meeting

The Mentelle Neighborhood Association will be holding our fall meeting at 7pm Tuesday
October 21st in the cafeteria of Ashland Elementary. Signs should be going up soon.

Items on the agenda include:

1. In a very interesting turn of events BOTH of the candidates for Urban County Council
district 3 (that is us) are MNA members. Diane Lawless and Eric Thomason have agreed to
make short presentations and answer questions. If you would like to submit questions in
advance that is fine or simply come and ask yourself. This is a great opportunity to get
to know our neighbors, one of which will soon be our councilperson.

2. Treasurers report. We have money in the bank! How to spend some of it will be a topic
for discussion. Social event(s), Project(s), Idea(s)?

3. Reports from other board members.

4. Nomination of board members. We need volunteers! The most critical need is for someone
to take over the newsletter. Gary Logsdon has moved out of the neighborhood and resigned
from the board. He teamed up with Jim Shambu at the inception of the MNA and they have
produced top quality flyers and newsletters. Jim has agreed to continue layout of the
Mentelle Median but we NEED someone to get the content and ads together (primary) and
handle printing and distribution (secondary).

Additionally we are still looking for someone(s) to handle social events.

5. Election of board members.

6. Membership renewals will begin for 2009. Bring cash or your checkbook and Richard Coles
can get you signed up.

7. Neighborhood concerns. Traffic Engineering has finished their report on the intersection
of Cramer and Richmond Avenues. It looks like there will be a 4-way stop installed there as
soon as the council approves. Hopefully I will know more by the meeting.

8. Q&A

If there are any other issues you would like to see discussed please let me know. We are
going to keep this meeting to under 90 minutes.

I hope to see everyone there!

Lewis

Proposed Development on Ellerslie Ave.

As some of you may know there is another proposed development for the vacant property at the end of Ellerslie Ave. This property, located between Walton and Midland Avenues has set vacant for many years after a street of shotgun style houses were demolished.

The proposed development is a 5 story 126 unit mixed used collection of structures. This will require a zone change to MU3 before it can proceed.

Our neighboring association in Bell Court decided to oppose this zone change. They will be having an organizational meeting on Monday, August 27th 5:30 pm at the Bell House. They will be prepaing for a hearing before the Urban County Council on September 18th at 5pm. They are concerned about traffic and building height.

The traffic impact will be considerable. The project will have two entry points, one on Walton and one on Midland. The traffic study predicts 1,400 trips per day. I would assume that those would split between the two streets since the Midland entry would be right turn only. Currently Walton has a traffic count of about 13,000 per day. So if the traffic splits evenly it is about a 5% increase on Walton. My feeling is that over the next 10 years the development out Winchester Road will impact Walton to a greater degree than this project.

At the last board meeting of the Mentelle Neighborhood Association we discussed this development. The consensus was that we did not feel it would be a good use of our limited resources to formally oppose the zone change. If any of you feel strongly about becoming involved I recomend that you attend the Bell Court meeting on Monday. I am always glad to hear your opinions on any issue.

More information as it becomes available will be available here.

    Ice Cream Social a SUCCESS!

The ice cream social on August 19 at the Ashland Elementary playground was a success. About 100 people attended and much ice cream was consumed. While the children played registration forms were circulated resulting in the membership of 65 households.

Announcements about the goals as envisioned by the organizers were made by Lynn Phillips and Lewis Gardner. These goals include:

    1. Representation with local government.

    2. Robberies, which might be reduced by a neighborhood Crime Watch and increased presence of LFUCG police.

    3. Inadequate regulation of speeding cars in residential areas.

    4. Maintaining the character of our neighborhood.

    5. Creation of a neighborhood directory.
