Proposed Development on Ellerslie Ave.

As some of you may know there is another proposed development for the vacant property at the end of Ellerslie Ave. This property, located between Walton and Midland Avenues has set vacant for many years after a street of shotgun style houses were demolished.

The proposed development is a 5 story 126 unit mixed used collection of structures. This will require a zone change to MU3 before it can proceed.

Our neighboring association in Bell Court decided to oppose this zone change. They will be having an organizational meeting on Monday, August 27th 5:30 pm at the Bell House. They will be prepaing for a hearing before the Urban County Council on September 18th at 5pm. They are concerned about traffic and building height.

The traffic impact will be considerable. The project will have two entry points, one on Walton and one on Midland. The traffic study predicts 1,400 trips per day. I would assume that those would split between the two streets since the Midland entry would be right turn only. Currently Walton has a traffic count of about 13,000 per day. So if the traffic splits evenly it is about a 5% increase on Walton. My feeling is that over the next 10 years the development out Winchester Road will impact Walton to a greater degree than this project.

At the last board meeting of the Mentelle Neighborhood Association we discussed this development. The consensus was that we did not feel it would be a good use of our limited resources to formally oppose the zone change. If any of you feel strongly about becoming involved I recomend that you attend the Bell Court meeting on Monday. I am always glad to hear your opinions on any issue.

More information as it becomes available will be available here.

    Ice Cream Social a SUCCESS!

The ice cream social on August 19 at the Ashland Elementary playground was a success. About 100 people attended and much ice cream was consumed. While the children played registration forms were circulated resulting in the membership of 65 households.

Announcements about the goals as envisioned by the organizers were made by Lynn Phillips and Lewis Gardner. These goals include:

    1. Representation with local government.

    2. Robberies, which might be reduced by a neighborhood Crime Watch and increased presence of LFUCG police.

    3. Inadequate regulation of speeding cars in residential areas.

    4. Maintaining the character of our neighborhood.

    5. Creation of a neighborhood directory.
